Recycling and Refuse Changes Affect Billing and Plastic Bags, Begin July 1

Refuse Fee to Appear on County Tax Bills; Plastic Bags No Longer Recycled

Residential customers of the city’s recycling and refuse service will find the charge for the service on a different bill in July and will no longer be able to recycle plastic bags via city recycling carts.

The city’s fee for recycling and refuse collection will appear on Montgomery County real property bills beginning in July. Formerly, the city billed customers directly for recycling and refuse collection service. The Mayor and Council approved the change, which will impact only residential customers, in May as part of the Fiscal Year 2017 budget. Customers will continue to receive recycling and refuse collection service from the city’s Department of Public Works.

In another change, the city will no longer accept plastic bags in city recycling carts. This includes plastic bags that are grouped into one bag and placed in the cart as well as bags used to bundle other materials for recycling. Instead, customers should look for grocery and retail stores that have plastic bag collection bins near their entrances. Find more information, including a drop-off locator identifying stores that accept the bags for recycling here.

The change was made due to costly damage that the bags are causing to the processing and sorting equipment.
