Arts Festival to Take Over Town Square in May

The streets of Town Square will transform into an outdoor art gallery in May with the 7th annual Rockville Arts Festival.

Formerly known as A-RTS at Rockville Town Square, this year’s festival is managed by VisArts, Montgomery County’s largest visual arts center.

From 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 145 artists will be represented at the festival alongside demonstrations of art, cooking and live entertainment on the Dawson’s Market Stage.

Visitors will be able to see demonstrations by exhibiting artists or try their hands at the ceramics wheel in the VisArts big top tent, and are also encouraged to take part in a community project to create a mural honoring the life of peace advocate Mattie J.T. Stepanek. When finished, the mural will be displayed in the Peace Room at Mainstreet Rockville, a new residential building with apartments designated for adults with disabilities.

The city is partnering with VisArts to reshape Town Square into an arts destination

“We believe that focusing on arts and arts activities is a way to make it different from some of the other urban centers that are around the area,” VisArts Executive Director Alice Nappy told Rockville 11. “We believe that there’s an artist in everyone and that art is a great way of communicating and that the arts are essential to a vibrant community.”

Maryland Avenue, East Middle and Gibbs streets will be closed to traffic. The festival is in easy walking distance of the Rockville Metro station (Red Line) and numerous parking garages are nearby
