City Seeks Input on Recommended Improvements to Development Review and Permitting Processes

The Planning and Development Services Department will hold three feedback sessions that will seek input from homeowners, builders, developers, neighborhood associations, civic groups and the public on recommended short-term improvements to Rockville’s development review and permitting process.

Those interested can attend any of the sessions, which will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22, and 2-4 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in the Mayor and Council Chambers at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.

The sessions are part of a larger initiative underway to improve the city’s development review and permitting processes to make them faster, accountable, smarter and more transparent (under a project named FAST).

Information on proposed changes to the city’s water and sewer and streets and public improvements regulations will also be available. These codes regulate the development review and permitting process for water, sewer and roads.

Proposed revisions to development-related processes and several chapters of city code include:

Chapter 5: Buildings and Building Regulations
Updates on new residential and commercial building changes that impact you.

Chapter 21: Streets and Public Improvements.
Reorganized to improve readability and clarify permit and construction provisions, among others.

Chapter 24: Water, Sewers and Sewage Disposal
Revised water/sewer authorization standards, among other proposals

Among the Mayor and Council’s top priorities are efficient and effective services, and supporting economic development by encouraging new investment through a process that balances and respects private and community interests.

The short-term recommendations, which the public will be asked to consider at the feedback sessions, were presented to the Mayor and Council at their Monday, May 6 meeting.
