King Farm Farmstead Horse Barn to be Stabilized

A horse barn on the historic King Farm Farmstead in Rockville will be shored up and stabilized following a vote by the Mayor and Council at their Monday, Oct. 8 meeting.

The barn has significant structural deficiencies, according to a staff report presented at the Oct. 8 meeting, and is in danger of collapsing under its own weight or deteriorating further from weather conditions.

The stabilization is intended to protect the barn’s structure for about two years until a use for the barn is determined and funds are budgeted for disassembly and reconstruction, salvaging historic resources for reuse.

The King Farm Farmstead, 1101 Grand Champion Drive, is comprised of eight buildings on 7 acres at the northern edge of the King Farm neighborhood. The farmstead was designated a historic district in 2006.
