A newly created Pedestrian Advocacy Committee will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13 in the Red Maple Room on the second floor of City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.
All Rockville residents are welcome and encouraged to take part in the committee, which was created by the Mayor and Council as an independent body and will have a city staff member serving as a liaison to the city government.
The June 13 meeting agenda will include:
- Background on why the group was created and its charge from the Mayor and Council.
- An overview of the city’s ongoing pedestrian advocacy efforts, including resources such as the sidewalk prioritization policy.
- How community members can advocate for a pedestrian-friendly approach to city planning, including how to support the Mayor and Council’s adoption of Vision Zero, with a goal of eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
The Mayor and Council approved the committee’s creation during their May 20 meeting following discussions with several community leaders. The committee’s goal will be to discuss pedestrian safety concerns and walkability, and to provide suggestions and recommendations for general and specific improvements. The committee will be self-appointed and self-directed without a timeframe for completing its work.
City Manager Rob DiSpirito suggested that the group develop a workplan and report back to the Mayor and Council to “better define mutual expectations.”
