Rockville Improves ADA Access in City Facilities

City Shows Progress on Projects Identified in Accessibility Audit

Accessible parking, bathrooms, elevators and athletic facilities are just some of the improvements Rockville is making at city parks and facilities, with the goal of accessibility for all.

Last year, Recreation Accessibility Consultants, LLC presented the Mayor and Council with a plan for updating city parks and facilities for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Accessibility projects completed at more than 20 parks and facilities are:

  • An accessible route to the first floor of City Hall.
  • Sixteen ADA-compliant spaces in the parking lot at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Social Hall, which also added an accessible hallway leading to the elevator to access both floors of the facility. Additional ADA-compliant assistive listening devices were purchased for theater patrons.
  • Connecting and filling gaps between pathways and athletic court entryways.
  • Decreasing the pounds of pressure it takes to open exterior doors.
  • Rebuilt parking spaces at Dogwood, Hillcrest and Woodley Gardens parks, the Pump House, Twinbrook Community Recreation Center and the Rockville Senior Center.
  • Building an ADA-compliant path to the bocce ball court at the senior center.
  • Revising and repositioning accessible parking signs.
  • Adding an accessible pathway to the renovated basketball courts at Calvin Park.
  • Improvements to the kitchenette at Twinbrook Community Recreation Center.
  • Installing ADA-compliant playgrounds and paths at Dogwood and Orchard Ridge parks.

City staff also completed training on how to better serve people with disabilities and create greater accessibility to city recreation and parks programs and facilities.
