Rockville’s tennis and pickleball courts, and the dog park at King Farm, will open Saturday, May 9 as the city begins reopening some of its park amenities for individual and small group sports that allow for physical distancing.
An updated state order, issued May 6 by Gov. Larry Hogan, broadens permitted outside activities at state facilities and allows local governments the flexibility to take similar actions at their discretion.
The order still prohibits gatherings of more than 10 people, in an effort to reduce public contact and slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and applies to athletic, social, cultural and community gatherings.
If you visit a park, please:
- Keep a safe distance. (Six feet or more.)
- Avoid touching surfaces.
- Do not gather in groups of 10 or more people.
- Refrain from touching playground equipment.
- Avoid activities that share equipment or involve touching.
- Wash hands immediately after your park visit.
Playgrounds, bathrooms, fitness stations, basketball, Bankshot and volleyball courts, and athletic fields, will remain closed until further notice.
In order to help slow the spread of COVID-19, city facilities remain closed to the public, and events, classes, programs, rentals and activities have been canceled through Friday, May 15. The facility closure applies to community centers, the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center, Rockville Senior Center, Croydon Creek Nature Center, Glenview Mansion, F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Montrose Discovery Preschool.
The Department of Recreation and Parks has canceled in-person programming, including classes, programs and activities, through spring. Rockville is offering select virtual programs that can be done in the safety of home.
Under Hogan’s revised order, broadened categories of allowable outside activity now include individual and small group sports such as golfing, tennis, and similar activities; outdoor fitness instruction; recreational fishing and hunting; recreational boating; and horseback riding.
