The city’s safety and risk, public works and recreation and parks teams took part in a ceremony to recognize Safe + Sound Week, a nationwide event held each August that recognizes the successes of workplace health and safety programs and offers information and ideas on how to keep America’s workers safe. During the ceremony, the city recognized Rockville employees for their contributions to promoting safety in city operations.
Awardees were Alexander Morales, a maintenance worker with the Department of Recreation and Parks; Jason Burdette, a crew supervisor; and William Moore, Jr., a maintenance worker with the Department of Public Works.
Morales was recognized for being detail-oriented, observant and cautious, asking safety-related questions and researching how best to protect himself and his crew. “His awareness and interest in safety, as well as his excellent communication skills make him a great member of the crew,” his nomination states.
According to Burdette’s nomination, “can be called upon to promptly address job site hazards and concerns brought to his attention. Working in trenches is one of the most hazardous jobs that the Department of Public Works employees perform, and Jason and his crew’s safety performance and low frequency of injuries is a testament to his emphasis on safety through the performance of his and his crew’s work.”
Moore’s “hands-on experience and direct involvement in day-to-day operations lend substantial value to his contributions to improving workplace safety,” according to his nomination.
Morales, Burdette and Moore each received a $500 check and a citation from their department heads in recognition of their awards.
