World’s Flags Go Up Around Rockville

One-hundred and ninety three flags from United Nation countries are in the process of being raised around Rockville, in time for Hometown Holidays and the Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade.

More than 150 flags were mounted today on light poles throughout the city. The rest will go up over the next six weeks.

The idea for the flags came from a town hall, held Feb. 9, to discuss diversity. The suggestions were that a display of flags would colorfully and recognizably represent Rockville’s international attraction. More than a third of the city’s residents were born outside the U.S., according to Census data.

Hometown Holidays is a two-day music and food festival held May 27-28, and the Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade is held on May 29.
