Partners in Education: Rockville Discusses Priorities with MCPS

Two meetings in October will further the Mayor and Council’s priority of fostering a collaborative relationship with county school officials in the interest of Rockville’s children.

Members of the Montgomery County school board and county schools Superintendent Jack Smith are scheduled to attend the Mayor and Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 9. Mayor and Council meetings are held at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave. Learn more when the meeting agenda is posted at www.rockvillemd.gov/AgendaCenter.

The board and superintendent are also scheduled to attend a regular meeting of the Maryland Municipal League’s Montgomery County chapter in October.

One of the Mayor and Council’s priority initiatives for the current term is to “partner with other jurisdictions to meaningfully engage with Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County and the state to promote school construction.”

During this year’s Maryland General Assembly session, the city advocated for state aid for construction projects at Rockville schools. This advocacy will continue in the 2018 Maryland General Assembly session, which begins in January.

In April, the Mayor and Council toured improvements at Julius West Middle School that include new classrooms, faculty rooms, a gym, a cafeteria, recreation areas and safer vehicle and pedestrian access. Smith is scheduled to release his latest construction budget proposal on Monday, Oct. 23. The Mayor and Council will continue to advocate for projects at schools that serve Rockville students during budget hearings before the school board in November and before the Montgomery County Council in spring.
