The Mayor and Council have decided on a preferred concept for the future of the 131-acre RedGate Park from three initial concepts presented to them at their Monday, Feb. 7 work session.
All three concepts prioritized nature-based amenities and passive recreation — activities such as connected trails for biking, hiking and walking, pathways, areas for picnicking, open spaces and natural habitats, as well as options for a possible amphitheater, community center, and sports field.
Following discussion, the preferred concept of the Mayor and Council included a smaller-scale amphitheater, community gardens, a nature playground, an arboretum, picnic areas, a network of trails and renovating the existing clubhouse.
Each concept was a preliminary and broad overview of possible amenities for the park, and was developed following an Oct. 18 discussion with the Mayor and Council. Concepts were based on the city’s strategic plan for recreation and parks in Rockville, considerable engagement with and feedback from the community, input from the Mayor and Council, and environmental constraints of natural features at the park.
City staff is working on the best method to reach out to the community and stakeholders for feedback and input on the Mayor and Council’s preferred concept.
