Deadlines are approaching for a multimedia contest and two awards focused on promoting human rights.
Contest and award winners will be honored at Rockville’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, Jan. 15.
Students in grades 9-12 residing in, or attending school in, the City of Rockville are invited to enter the Student Multimedia Contest for a chance to win a first-place prize of $1,000. Contestants will create a video, photo, essay, poem or other work of art to raise awareness and encourage thought and understanding of a human rights topic.
The city’s Human Rights Commission is sponsoring the contest to encourage students to express their creativity and think about human rights. Entries will be judged on creativity, work quality, effort and relevance. First, second and third place winners will be recognized at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.
Submissions are being accepted through Monday, Dec. 11. For information about obtaining an entry packet, contact Janet Kelly at 240-314-8316 or [email protected]. For more information, including contest guidelines, visit www.rockvillemd.gov/humanrights.
The commission is also accepting nominations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award, to be presented to a high school student residing in, or attending school in, the City of Rockville who has worked to fulfill King’s dream in either their school or the community.
A second honor, the F. Michael Taff Award, will be presented to an individual, organization or business that has helped to improve the lives of people with disabilities in Rockville. It is named in honor of the late F. Michael Taff, a dedicated human rights activist and former chair of the Human Rights Commission.
Find and submit nomination forms for either award at www.rockvillemd.gov/mlk. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Dec. 1.
