Feb. 24 Event Will Feature Music, Dancing and Martial Arts Demonstrations
Celebrate the Year of the Dog with performances, interactive activities and cultural displays at the city’s Lunar New Year celebration.
The annual celebration will be held from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive. Multicultural performances will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The city is organizing the celebration in partnership with Rockville’s Asian Pacific American Task Force.
The celebration will feature 10 performance groups representing China, Cambodia, Korea, Vietnam and Nepal. Performances will include vocal groups, martial arts, a Korean drum dance, modern Chinese dance and the traditional lion dance.
In its 10th year, the Lunar New Year celebration is a source of pride for the city’s Asian community and an educational opportunity for neighbors to learn about Asian culture. The celebration will mark the year 4716, the Year of the Dog on the Chinese Zodiac calendar. One in three Rockville residents was born outside the United States and 54 percent of the city’s foreign-born population was born in Asia, according to the city’s planning department.
