County’s e-Scooter and e-Bike Pilot Arrives in Rockville

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s pilot for e-scooters and e-bikes rolled out to areas of the county, including Rockville, on June 1.

Under the program, customers, who must be 18 or older with a valid driver’s license, use a mobile app to locate a nearby dockless bike or e-scooter with GPS and unlock it.

If you use the program, here’s a few things to remember:

  • Use a helmet.
  • Ride on the street only. No sidewalk riding of e-bikes or e-scooters.
  • Observe the rules of the road:
    — No riding on roads where the speed limit is greater than 50 mph.
    — No riding with both ears covered by headsets or earplugs.
  • When parking, do not block sidewalks, curb ramps, bus stops and entrances.

This is the third phase of Montgomery County’s pilot testing of dockless vehicles. As the first suburban jurisdiction in the country with dockless bikeshare, Montgomery County has already conducted a pilot test of dockless bikes in Silver Spring, Takoma Park and North Bethesda. The program serves the county’s goal of providing more environmentally friendly transportation options.
