Community members have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a police officer this spring with a 10-week citizens course and, for the first time, a new six-week course for residents who are 60 and older.
The Rockville City Police Department is accepting applications for the free, 10-week Citizens Police Academy, which will be held in March, April and May. Participants 18 and older will receive hands-on training and earn a graduation certificate upon course completion. Classes meet in the evening at a time and place to be determined. Topics will include:
- Crime scene processing.
- Firearms training simulations.
- K-9 unit demonstrations.
- Traffic law.
- Detectives and investigations.
- Bomb unit.

RCPD is also offering a special course highlighting safety and education for the 60-plus population. The course also will explore code enforcement, the K-9 unit and forensic science and will include a tour of the city’s police station. It will meet from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Wednesdays, March 22-April 26, in the Azalea Room of the Rockville Senior Center, 1150 Carnation Drive. Register by March 15 for course #58092 at rockenroll.rockvillemd.gov or in person at the center. The class is free for city residents and senior center members, $7 for nonresidents and nonmembers.
