Rockville Metro Station Study Begins

The City of Rockville has begun work on a study of the Rockville Metro Station in coordination with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and Montgomery County.

The study will include communitywide input and is expected to conclude in October. The process will result in recommendations for possible development and site improvements on WMATA-owned property at the station.

While a critical part of the city’s transportation network, the station, which opened in 1984, is showing signs of age. The study’s goals are to improve the station’s aging infrastructure to better connect with Rockville’s downtown and explore potential development opportunities at the site, as well as implement ways to increase bus and train ridership.

Community visioning workshops will be held this month, offering a public opportunity to help establish guiding principles and priorities for the project. The time and date of the workshops are to be determined and will be posted on the project webpage, once available.

The results of those workshops will be presented Monday, May 10 to the Mayor and Council. A public meeting later in the process will allow the public to give feedback on the draft concept plans that will be developed.
