The Mayor and Council have unanimously selected City Construction LLC of Washington, D.C., to modernize and expand the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center’s locker room and lobby.
Construction, which would affect about 7,000 square feet at the center, is tentatively expected to begin in late winter 2019 and is projected to last about 12 months.
Key elements of the project include a complete renovation and expansion of the locker room and lobby; modernizing infrastructure and amenities; improving Americans with Disabilities Act compliance; and reconfiguring the lobby. The indoor pool’s locker rooms were constructed in 1968 when the center had only one swimming pool. The swim and fitness center now has two indoor and three outdoor pools, a whirlpool and fitness and exercise room, and is used by more than 300,000 people each year.
An open house in June 2017 allowed attendees to see a presentation of the conceptual design, review highlights of facility areas, talk to city staff and the design team, and provide feedback.
