Boards and Commissions Task Force Delivers Report

After a year of work and 26 meetings, the Boards and Commissions Task Force delivered its report and recommendations to the Mayor and Council at their Monday, Oct. 21 meeting.

“Collectively, the volunteers who work on these boards and commissions contribute thousands of hours of service to the city in important functions that expand the city’s capabilities,” the report states.

The task force’s mission was to review each board and commission, including identifying gaps or overlaps between the city’s 31 boards and commissions. Its evaluation of the boards and commissions focused on five criteria: diversity, relevance, transparency, effectiveness and operational performance.

Key recommendations included: improving diversity; increased transparency; coordinating missions, objectives and workplans; enhancing volunteers’ experiences; updating guidelines and procedures; and implementing a process for Mayor and Council review of new boards and commissions.

The task force also unanimously recommended the creation of a full-time city position to support boards and commissions, coordinate their activities, and encourage volunteerism.
