Washington Balalaika Society presents “International Favorites”

The Washington Balalaika Society celebrates its 35th season with a concert of international favorites, featuring soprano Olga Orlovskaya and Andrei Saveliev on the balalaika. WBS artistic director Svetlana Nikonova will conduct. The Washington Balalaika Society is a community orchestra of musicians who perform the music of Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Russia on traditional folk instruments. It is the largest orchestra of its kind in America, and performs in the greater Washington, D.C. area.
The concert’s repertoire will include Schubert’s “Serenade,” Dvořák’s “Slavonic Dance,” Bizet’s “Habanera” from “Carmen,” and Massenet’s haunting “Thais Meditation.”
Tickets are $30; $25, seniors and military; $15, students; $5, children 12 and younger.

Josephine, daughter of the captain of the H.M.S. Pinafore, falls in love with simple sailor Ralph Rackstraw. Her father, however, has already promised her hand to Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Josephine is torn between her love for Ralph and her duty to her father. Can love truly “level all ranks?”
