Rockville will mark three years of progress on its Climate Action Plan with an update to the Mayor and Council highlighting grants to support flood resiliency, an expanded city fleet of electric vehicles, new composting stations, and rebates for residents installing environmentally friendly landscaping.
The Mayor and Council initiated the plan in January 2022 with the goal of equitably reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change and improving community and city resilience to extreme weather. At their Monday, April 28 meeting, the Mayor and Council will hear an update on progress made over the last year.
Achievements from the progress report include:
- Since 2021, replaced a total of 25 vehicles in the city fleet to electric or hybrid models and expanded electric charging stations on city property and rights of way to a total of 22 charging ports.
- Opened a third food waste compost drop-off station at Twinbrook Community Recreation Center to increase collection capacity. The three drop-off stations composted 114 tons of food scraps in 2024, a 17.5% increase from 2023.
- Reimbursed $49,043 to residents for converting to environmentally friendly landscaping through the RainScapes Rebate program.
