Bullards Park Stream Restoration Project Prepares for Construction

Design work continues on a project to restore and stabilize a portion of the stream in Bullards Park, at Roxboro and Calvert roads in the West End neighborhood.

Construction on the project is anticipated to begin in June and take six months to complete. It includes restoring and enhancing approximately 340 linear feet of the tributary to Watts Branch, in the Potomac River watershed.

A 48-inch storm drain outfall at the entrance to Bullards Park is severely eroded, jeopardizing public and private infrastructure, including exposing the sewer main that crosses the stream.

The project is focused on protecting the sanitary sewer infrastructure and stabilizing stream banks, while minimizing impacts to trees. The need for the project was identified through the city’s routine infrastructure inspection and stream assessment.

Planned improvements include stream restoration and stabilization, wetland enhancement, and controlling invasive species, for example, bamboo, while re-establishing native plants. The goal is to reduce pollutants that flow through the tributary to the river and, eventually, the Chesapeake Bay.
