Cemetery Cleanup for Community Service Day

Peerless Rockville seeks volunteers to help clean up and beautify Haiti Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 28 as part of Montgomery County’s Community Service Day.

The cleanup begins at 10 a.m. at the historic cemetery at 205 Martins Lane.

Peerless members, and volunteers from the Montgomery County Police Department and Haiti community will participate. This event has been pre-approved for service learning hours for Montgomery County students. Children under 12 may volunteer if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring gloves, rakes, clippers and other yard tools. Volunteers will work to beautify the property, protect the graves and gravestones, and remove overgrowth, branches, leaves and other debris. Individuals with trucks to haul debris are especially appreciated.

Haiti Cemetery was one of the earliest burial grounds in Rockville. It opened in the 1880s and became the resting place for members of the African-American community on Martins Lane. Many of the families now living on Martins Lane are direct descendants of the people buried there. The cemetery was designated a local historic district in 2002.

Register by calling Peerless Rockville at 301-762-0096 or visiting www.eventbrite.com/e/service-day-haiti-cemetery-clean-up-tickets-37738551022.
