After more than a decade at the helm of Rockville’s Department of Recreation and Parks as director, Tim Chesnutt has announced he will retire Wednesday, May 15.
During his service, Chesnutt oversaw the first dedicated pickleball-only courts in Montgomery County at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park, as well as a new concrete skate park at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center, the splash pad at Maryvale Park, locker room improvements at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center, and Americans with Disability Act improvements at the Rockville Senior Center, F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Glenview Mansion.
Also among those numerous achievements, Chesnutt presided over plans to re-envision the future of a former 130-acre golf course into the RedGate Park and Arboretum Master Plan.
Chesnutt’s contribution to RedGate planning “will transform the former golf course into a significant recreation amenity for the city and surrounding area,” acting City Manager Craig Simoneau noted in an email announcing Chesnutt’s retirement.

Chesnutt joined the city in March 2014. He came to Rockville from Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he had served as director of the recreation and parks department since 2009.
