Maryland General Assembly’s 90-Day Session Begins Jan. 10
Rockville’s 2018 state legislative priorities include calls for more state aid for school construction and for youth and senior services, and funding for improvements at the Rockville Senior Center.
Under priorities approved by the Mayor and Council last month and presented to the Montgomery County Delegation on Nov. 13, the city will advocate for:
- Increased school construction funding from the state to address overcrowded and aging school facilities in Rockville and across the 162,000-student county school system. Read more on this page about the Mayor and Council’s cooperation with Montgomery County Public Schools.
- Enhanced senior programs and services to address transportation and recreation needs and other programs to help seniors age in place.
- The preservation of funding that Rockville’s Community Services Division uses to provide services to at-risk youth, including after-school, mentoring and counseling programs.
- A state bond bill to help fund a Rockville Senior Center modernization project. The project includes Americans with Disabilities Act-related improvements to the entrance and key parts of the facility.
- Permanent restoration of municipal Highway User Revenue funding. The state provided one-time restorations in the aid, used for road maintenance and small infrastructure improvement projects, in each of the past five fiscal years.
- Authority for state and local governments to deny Maryland Public Information Act requests for resident email addresses and phone numbers.
- Protection of the authority of a municipality to assert local control over the siting and installation of small cellular antennas, or distributed antennae systems, and to impose a fee for permit review and rental of space in a municipal right of way.
