Energy Bill Assistance from Pepco, and Other Resources That Can Help

Struggling to pay your energy bill? Millions of dollars in assistance funding is available, Pepco recently announced. If you’re a Pepco customer (or even if you’re not), the company has put together a list of grants and programs that may help.

See Pepco’s article for more tips to find assistance.

Here are the ones most relevant to Rockville residents:

Maryland customers can apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program through the Maryland Department of Human Services website, or by calling the Maryland Department of Human Services Office of Home Energy Programs at 1-800-332-6347. You can also find the following programs on the DHS website:

  • The Electric Universal Service Program helps eligible customers pay for a portion of their current electric bill.
  • The Arrearage Retirement Assistance program helps customers with large, past-due electric and gas bills. If eligible, customers may receive forgiveness of up to $2,000 toward their past due bill.
  • The Utility Service Protection Program is designed to help low-income families during the heating season.

Visit the Maryland Department of Human Services Office of Home Energy Programs or call 1-800-332-6347 for more information.

Income-eligible Montgomery County residents can receive energy assistance from Interfaith Works at 301-762-8682.

Customers who are past due on their Pepco bill can contact the company at 202-833-7500 or visit pepco.com/Help.

Customers, Pepco states, “should never wait until they are in crisis to contact the company.”

The City of Rockville can help, too. See Rockville’s financial assistance page for emergency help.

Programs include the Rockville Emergency Assistance Program; Bridge Rental Assistance; and Home Energy Assistance. (More details are available on the City of Rockville’s Department of Housing and Community Services webpage).

For other assistance programs the city operates — such as home repairs, affordable housing, grants and mediation — see our community assistance page .
