Rockville Opens Some Facilities to Combat Sweltering Weekend Heat

With temperatures across the weekend expected to reach triple digits, some City of Rockville facilities will be open at these locations during the following hours to cool off:

Croydon Creek Nature Center
852 Avery Rd.
Saturday: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Sunday: 1-4 p.m.

Lincoln Park Community Center
357 Frederick Ave.
Saturday: 8:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Thomas Farm Community Center
700 Fallsgrove Dr.
Saturday: 8:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Twinbrook Community Recreation Center
12920 Twinbrook Pkwy.
Saturday: 8:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Rockville Swim and Fitness Center
355 Martins Ln.
Saturday: 6 a.m.-9 p.m.
Sunday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Community members using the facilities may stay in designated public areas for free. Those who want to use amenities (e.g., fitness rooms, computer labs or drop-in programs) may do so after paying a daily admission fee.

An adult must accompany children to the centers.

In addition to staying indoors in an air-conditioned place, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness” has advice to help keep you healthy in hot weather:

  • Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level.
  • Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place, is a much better way to cool off.
  • Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
