Recycle Your Pumpkins — But Compost Carefully!

Don’t let your pumpkins go to waste, try these pumpkin-recycling ideas!

  • Eat. Use the pulp to create purees, soups, baked goods or dog treats. Roast the seeds for an easy fall snack.
  • Donate. Ask local farms or animal organizations if they could use pumpkins for animal feed.
  • Reuse. Cut your pumpkin in half and turn it into a natural bird feeder or fall planter.
  • Compost. Undecorated pumpkins are accepted at the city’s food scraps drop-offs. Cut large pumpkins into smaller pieces before placing them in the bins to save space.

Before you donate or compost your pumpkins, please check inside for candles or battery-powered lights. Pumpkins decorated with glitter, paint, stickers or other inorganic materials will contaminate the composting piles and should be placed in the trash.

Learn more about what you can compost at www.rockvillemd.gov/foodscraps.
