Fall Leaf Collection Begins in October

Area 1:     Oct. 31-Nov. 4; Dec. 5-9
Area 2:    Nov. 7-11; Dec. 12-16
Area 3:     Nov. 14-18; Dec. 19-23
Area 4:    Oct. 17-21; Nov. 21-25
Area 5:     Oct. 24-28; Nov. 28-Dec. 2

Rockville will vacuum leaves from neighborhood curbs in two rounds, beginning Monday, Oct. 17.

Residents should rake next to, but out of, the roadway. Leaves should be raked no earlier than one week prior to the collection date to avoid grass damage or fire hazards.

An interactive map at www.rockvillemd.gov/leafcollection allows residents to input their address and learn when their leaves will be collected.

DO: Place leaves at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection dates. Sticks and all other objects must be removed from leaf piles.

DO NOT: Pile leaves in bike lanes or where vehicles are parked. Vehicle exhaust can ignite dry leaves.

DO: Avoid street parking near leaf piles or close to other vehicles during your collection week so that leaf collection trucks can access leaf piles.

DO NOT: Dump leaves, grass clippings or other yard waste into storm drains, along stream banks or directly into streams. Although yard waste is biodegradable, leaves can clog storm drains or cause blockages that contribute to localized flooding. Decomposing leaves can also release nutrients, stimulating algae blooms that kill fish.

DO: Use biodegradable paper lawn bags or 32-gallon trash cans to set leaves out with yard waste on your collection day, after fall leaf collection ends.

DO NOT: Collect leaves in plastic garbage bags.

DO: Use alternative methods for disposing of leaves, such as mulching or composting. This saves collection and disposal costs.
