Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony to Celebrate a ‘Modern Day Dream’

Awards Nomination Deadline Approaches

Rockville honors the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16 with performances and awards recognizing Rockville community members who are carrying on King’s legacy.

The 45th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will be held at 10 a.m. at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive.

The celebration will include diverse, interactive and multicultural performances, awards and a keynote speech by Gregory E. Bell, supervisor of diversity initiatives for Montgomery County Public Schools.

Bell will deliver a speech incorporating this year’s theme of “Modern Day Dream,” which reflects on how King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream Speech” still resonates.

The celebration is free and open to all ages. A reception will follow.

The City of Rockville’s Human Rights Commission will present two awards as part of the celebration.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award honors a Rockville high school student for advancing the goals and dreams of Dr. King. The F. Michael Taff Award honors an individual, business or organization from Rockville for improving the lives of people with disabilities.

The deadline for nominations has been extended to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Find nomination forms that can be submitted online, video of the 2016 celebration and more information at www.rockvillemd.gov/mlk. For information about access, call the city’s Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator at 240-314-8108.
