May is Bike Month: Head Out for a Spin

For all Bike Month events, please make sure to be safe out on Rockville’s roads, and remember to bring your helmet. State law in Maryland requires bicycles riders 16 and younger to wear helmets. In Montgomery County, riders 18 and younger must wear helmets.

Tour de Cookie
7 a.m., Saturday, May 6
Meet at Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus, 9601 Medical Center Drive.
Join the Tree House CAC for a 12-, 27- or 43-mile bike ride to collect cookies and enjoy the scenery, while raising awareness of child abuse prevention. The Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee will support this ride with marshals and mechanics. Register to ride at www.tourdecookie.com.

Bike Month Kickoff Ride
10 a.m., Sunday, May 7
Meet at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.
Join Rockville officials and neighbors to celebrate National Bike Month. Pedal a casual 6-mile loop along multi-use trails and quiet residential streets to explore some of the city’s extensive and diverse bicycling infrastructure. The route includes a few paths, bridges and tunnels.

Bike to School Day
Wednesday, May 10
Ritchie Park Elementary School celebrates the benefits of biking and walking to school during National Bike to School Day, along with communities, schools and families around the country.

11th Annual Rockville Ride of Silence
7 p.m., Wednesday, May 17
Starts at Rockville Town Center (on Maryland Avenue).
Bring a helmet and bike for an hour-long police-escorted 10-mile ride through neighborhoods, as part of an international event that honors those killed or injured on a bicycle. Riders must be comfortable riding on the street with traffic and at about 10 mph.

National Bike to Work Day
9 a.m., Friday, May 19
Pit stops in Rockville Town Center, Fallsgrove and Twinbrook.

RBAC at the Farmers Market
10 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, May 13-July 29
Bring your bike to the farmers market for a safety check. (The market is in Rockville Town Center, at the corner of East Jefferson Street/MD 28 and Monroe Street.) See bicycling tips, including advice on maintenance, at www.rockvillemd.gov/bicycling.

Tuesday Evening Rides
6:30 p.m., June 6-Aug. 29
Suitable for families, including riders under 12 accompanied by an adult. Find out more at www.facebook.com/bikerockville.

Kidical Mass Family Ride
Saturday, June 10 • 10 a.m.
Meet at Safeway in King Farm Village Center (403 Redland Blvd.).
Kidical Mass is a nationwide movement to get kids and their families out on bikes — whether in trailers, bicycle seats or on their own two wheels. The ride will be at the pace of the slowest rider, so the speed may be slow. The route travels a combination of shared-use trails, bike lanes and low-traffic residential streets.

Carl Henn Millennium Trail Ride
10 a.m., Sunday, June 18
Meet at Rockville Senior Center
