New Era for Rockville with the Opening of Bayard Rustin Elementary

Tuesday, Sept. 4 is the first day of the 2018-19 school year for Montgomery County Public Schools, and the beginning of a new era for public schools in Rockville.

Bayard Rustin Elementary School will open on the former site of Hungerford Park Elementary, at 332 W. Edmonston Drive. Montgomery County’s 206th public school will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is part of the Richard Montgomery cluster of schools.

Bayard Rustin was a civil rights leader, gay rights activist and an organizer of the 1963 civil rights march on Washington, D.C. The county school board voted in April to name the school for Rustin.

Rockville 11 has a video tour of the new school and more facts about the school’s namesake. Visit www.youtube.com/cityofrockville and search “Bayard Rustin.”
