Rockville Civic Ballet to Celebrate Half Century

Company to be Recognized by Mayor and Council

The Rockville Civic Ballet, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will receive a certificate of recognition from the Mayor and Council at their April 29 meeting.

The certificate will be presented to Rockville Civic Ballet directors Eleanor Simpson and Erin Kwong, who grew up in the ballet company under the leadership of founder and artistic director Claudia Mangan.

The company was founded by Mangan in 1974 with the vision of making ballet accessible to everyone within Rockville. In partnership with the city, the company has flourished. Today, the Rockville Civic Ballet boasts more than 100 children, teen and adult dancers, and is supported by 30 volunteers.

As part of the celebration, the ballet will perform “Giselle,” a romantic tale of betrayal and forgiveness, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 17 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, 603 Edmonston Drive.

Tickets cost $17, and $13 for children 12 and younger and seniors 60 and older. Known for its annual holiday production of “The Nutcracker,” which is now a tradition, the company also performs original adaptations of Shakespeare, literary classics and fairy tales.
