Rockville to Hold School Facilities Planning Session with MCPS

School Officials to Attend Oct. 30 Work Session; City to Testify in November

Construction at schools serving Rockville’s children will be the focus as members of the Montgomery County Public Schools board and county schools Superintendent Jack Smith are scheduled to attend a Mayor and Council work session on Monday, Oct. 30.

School officials will provide an overview of modifications MCPS is considering to its facility planning process and capital improvements program, an update on Richard Montgomery Elementary School No. 5, which is scheduled to open in August 2018, and major recommendations in Smith’s capital improvements budget proposal, which was released on Monday, Oct. 23. The board is scheduled to vote on that proposal in November.

The work session will also give the Mayor and Council an opportunity to ask questions of school officials about additional planning for Rockville schools. The Mayor and Council will continue to advocate for projects at schools that serve Rockville students during budget hearings before the school board in November and before the Montgomery County Council in spring.

Mayor and Council work sessions are held at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave. Learn more when the agenda is posted at www.rockvillemd.gov/AgendaCenter.

One of the Mayor and Council’s priority initiatives for the current term is to “partner with other jurisdictions to meaningfully engage with Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County and the state to promote school construction.”

During this year’s Maryland General Assembly session, the city advocated for state aid for construction projects at Rockville schools. This advocacy will continue in the 2018 Maryland General Assembly session, which begins in January.
