Rockville’s First Black Police
Officer Laid to Rest

Richard Eugene “Gene” Dyson.

Richard Eugene “Gene” Dyson, the first African-American officer to serve in the Rockville City Police Department, has died. He was 81.

Dyson served with the department from July 1968 to March 1983.

Dyson was a U.S. Army veteran, and a life member of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department. He was laid to rest on Friday, Aug. 18, at The Catholic Cemeteries of Archdioceses of Washington, Inc., in Silver Spring. Members of the RCPD acted as police escort. Casket bearers were members of the RVFD.
