Season’s Eating: Sustainable Cooking Tips

When preparing a holiday feast follow these simple tips to make it more sustainable:

  • Reduce food waste by buying and preparing only what you need.
  • Scrape fats, oils and grease into the trash or a sealable can. Never pour fats, oils or grease down the drain where they can lead to clogged pipes and sewer backups.
  • Bake several dishes in the oven at a time to save energy.
  • Use dishes, glassware, flatware, tablecloths and cloth napkins instead of disposable items.
  • Make creative centerpieces out of things you find around the house or in the yard, such as pine cones, leaves and branches.
  • Encourage guests to take home leftovers or store them in the freezer to enjoy later.
