South Stonestreet Avenue
Construction to Begin May 8

Safety Upgrades Near Metro Include Lane Reduction, Sidewalk and Bike Lane

Construction is set to begin the week of May 8 to improve pedestrian safety and access to the Rockville Metro station along South Stonestreet Avenue between Baltimore and Park roads.

The South Stonestreet Avenue Road Diet project will install a sidewalk on the west side (Metro side) of South Stonestreet Avenue and a bike lane on the east side. It will also reduce traffic lanes from four to three, replace curbs and gutters, and include Americans with Disabilities Act-related accessibility upgrades, stormwater management and minor drainage modifications.

Narrowing the roadway will accommodate the sidewalk without having to remove trees. The bike lane will be added through a combination of shared lane markings known as sharrows and painted bike lanes.

Work should last approximately three months, weather permitting. Construction impacts will include daytime lane closures outside of peak traffic hours. Signs will be posted to notify motorists and residents of lane closures.

The project’s cost is $389,000, with $311,000 funded by a grant through the Federal Highway Administration’s Complete Streets near Metro program. It is part of over $13 million the City of Rockville is investing in East Rockville infrastructure projects to improve roads, water and sewer systems, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
