Writers: Pens at the Ready

Writers and high school student writers are invited to submit entries to the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Festival’s short-story contests.

Entries in both competitions must be postmarked by Saturday, Aug. 3.
Stories must be fewer than 4,000 words — between 1,500 and 3,000 words for the student contest — and unpublished.

Residents of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., are eligible to enter; the student contest is open only to Montgomery County high schoolers.
First prize for the short-story competition is $500 ($250 for the student competition) plus an invitation to speak briefly about the story at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Glenview Mansion, 603 Edmonston Drive. Two runner-up prizes of $100 each will be awarded at the festival in each contest.

Winning entries will be printed in the literary festival’s 2019 program.
More details, including contest rules and entry forms, are available at https://fscottfestival.org/festival/short-story-contest.

This year, the festival will honor “The Joy Luck Club” author Amy Tan with the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Achievement in American Literature. The award has been presented to some of America’s most distinguished writers, including Richard Russo, Annie Proulx, Norman Mailer, Pat Conroy, John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates.

The festival’s activities include writing workshops, a conversation between Tan and best-selling author Mark Childress, and a screening of “The Joy Luck Club.

The festival is for writers, book lovers and fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
