With vehicle theft rates on the rise, the Rockville City Police Department will give away a limited number of steering wheel locks from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the RCPD station, 2 W. Montgomery Ave.
The free steering wheel locks, which can be used with all vehicle makes and models, will be available while supplies last. Residents will only need to produce a registration card to verify their vehicle is registered in the City of Rockville.
This is a drive-up event. Please enter the RCPD parking lot from West Montgomery Avenue and exit onto South Washington Street.
In January, RCPD made an official request to the Hyundai Motor Company to provide the department with steering wheel locks for city residents.
Hyundai and Kia models have accounted for 74% of all vehicle thefts reported in the City of Rockville since January. Rockville experienced a 68% increase in vehicle thefts from 2022 to 2023, mirroring a trend impacting nearly every jurisdiction in the country.
The lock giveaway is the latest step taken by the RCPD to stop vehicle thefts, including increasing proactive patrols and publicizing tips for preventing vehicle thefts.
Once the supply of locks is depleted, RCPD will request additional locks to distribute to residents.
