Zoning Ordinance Rewrite to Kick Off Soon

A comprehensive rewrite of Rockville’s zoning ordinance will be underway soon to modernize city code in a way that accommodates the changing living, working and lifestyle choices of residents in the 21st century.

The Mayor and Council approved a contract June 13 with ZoneCo to assist the city with rewriting the zoning ordinance in chapter 25 of city code. The current zoning ordinance was adopted in 2009.

The project, expected to be completed in the next 18-24 months, will include ways for the public to be engaged.

The purpose of the project is to:

  • Implement recommendations of the Rockville 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
  • Accomplish goals from the FAST initiative — making the development review and permitting process Faster, Accountable, Smarter and Transparent.
  • Incorporate the best practices of planning and zoning.
  • Create an easily understood, accessible and organized document.

A meeting to kick off the zoning ordinance rewrite will be held this fall.
