Jonathan Lee. Not pictured: Cpl. Brandon Thomas.

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the big celebration typically held in June, but that didn’t stop Rockville from honoring members of its police department during a small Public Safety Awards ceremony hosted by the Rockville Chamber of Commerce on Sept.  9 at Veteran’s Memorial Plaza.

Each year, members of public safety agencies that serve the City of Rockville (the Rockville City Police Department, Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation) are recognized.

RCPD members were honored with citations for their lifesaving acts and outstanding service to the community as follows:

The Distinguished Service Citation recognizes diligence, perseverance and timely judgement in the performance of a difficult task that resulted in the protection of life or property, the prevention of a major crime, or the apprehension of an armed and dangerous criminal. It was presented to:

Officer Ronnie Crowe, for performing CPR on a person who was not breathing at the Montgomery County Detention Center’s Central Process Unit.

Officer Jeremy Ziegler, for performing CPR and administering the life-saving drug Narcan to a heroin user who was unresponsive.

Officer Brandon Thomas, for performing CPR on a person who was not breathing at a fast food restaurant. (Thomas has since been promoted to the rank of corporal.)

The Meritorious Service Citation is presented to a member of a public safety organization or civilian community who deserves acknowledgement of a duty or task that falls above the normal scope of his or her job or that could easily have gone undone or unnoticed. It was presented to:

Cpl. Jonathan Lee, for using Chinese-language translation abilities to communicate with human trafficking victims while assisting with a search warrant.

Jason Ng, who handles information technology support for the department, including managing the body-worn camera system and department computers.
