Mayor and Council Approve Vision for the Next Decade of Bicycling in Rockville

The Mayor and Council on April 3 approved an update to the Rockville Bikeway Master Plan that seeks to guide planning of bicycle infrastructure over the next decade.

As part of the city’s Comprehensive Master Plan, the plan establishes a vision of safe and efficient multimodal transportation within Rockville. It proposes 22 miles of new dedicated bicycle facilities and 19 miles of new shared roadway designations throughout the city.

Numerous recommendations have been implemented since the bikeway plan was last updated in 2004, including completion of the Carl Henn Millennium Trail, an 11-mile bicycle beltway around Rockville. The 2004 update laid the groundwork for an expansion to more than 34 miles of shared-use paths and more than 33 miles of shared roadway designations throughout the city. The latest update aims to build on that success by providing a starting point for construction projects that expand the existing bicycle network, improve safety and increase connections to all parts of the city for recreation, commuting and shopping.

The plan promotes cycling as a legitimate means of transportation that should be considered as part of urban design and in the planning of land use, transportation infrastructure and other major projects.
