City Launches Online Map of Public Art

A new online map, Rockville Arts in Public Places, shows the locations of 50 public artworks around the city, alongside details that include the artist’s name and a description or artist statement about the piece.

“The different pieces, scattered throughout the city, reflect the vitality and diversity of the people and businesses within the community,” the site states. “The arts are very important to the residents of Rockville, and serve to maintain and enrich the character of the community, improve the quality of life and foster economic development.”

The city requires 1 percent of the construction cost of city projects be set aside for works of art, and also that $1 per capita in the city’s Capital Improvements Program go toward the commission or acquisition of art that is owned or maintained by the city in locations accessible to the public.
