Community Policing to Remain a Priority Under RCPD Veteran’s Leadership
Maj. Bob Rappoport, a 28-year veteran of the Rockville City Police Department (RCPD), was appointed acting chief of the department, effective June 2, following the retirement of Terrance N. Treschuk, who served as chief for 27 years.
As he has moved through the ranks of the RCPD, Rappoport’s career has included a variety of responsibilities including command, at various times, of all three of the department’s bureaus (Field Services, Special Operations and Administrative Services).
Rappoport intends to continue the department’s legacy of community policing.
“Community policing, for our officers, is an everyday way of life for them,” he said. “It’s not a philosophical saying. Our Rockville city police officers go above and beyond what a typical officer would do in a city of this size anywhere else in the country.”
Rappoport holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Lycoming College, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of the Montgomery County Police Academy and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
In choosing a career in law enforcement, Rappoport followed in the footsteps of his older brother, whose 39-year career in law enforcement culminated as police chief for the City of Fairfax, Virginia (2001-2014) and as the deputy police chief for Amtrak’s Mid-Atlantic Region (2014-2015). His sister is a financial crimes analyst for the FBI’s Las Vegas Field Office. He has two teenage children.
