Rockville Senior Center Celebrates Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month and the Rockville Senior Center is planning activities and programs to celebrate. The 2024 theme is “Powered by Connection,” which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on health and well-being.

And never was there a better time to connect with the vibrant 60-plus community at the Rockville Senior Center, with activities, trips, classes, arts and enrichment, courses, programs and support groups.

Highlights in May and June include:

Around the World in a Day: 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 6.

More than 20 countries are represented through the center’s diverse membership. For International Day, celebrate Rockville’s local cultures with food, music and dance. Register with course #31287. Tickets cost $5 for members and $8 for nonmembers.

Second Annual Senior Resource Housing Expo: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

Free and open to the community. The expo highlights information about local housing facilities for older adults, as well as services and companies that promote aging in place.

Line Dance Party with Gizelle: 3:30-4:45 p.m. Thursday, May 16 and June 13.

Popular social dances, swing, salsa and line dancing. Register with course #31104. No partner necessary. $21 for all seniors.

Seniors Teaching Seniors: 10-11:30 a.m. Fridays, May 10-24.

Learn from your fellow seniors at this three-part coding course for beginners. Register with course #31237. Free.

A Royal Mother’s Day Tea: Friday, May 3.

Be a guest of the senior center for a tea party to celebrate mothers and friends. Includes tea, an assortment of tasty treats and music by harpist Wynne Roos. Show off your best hats and attire for this festive occasion. Register with course #31214. Cost: $12 for members, $15 for nonmembers.

Father’s Day Cook In: Noon-1 p.m. Friday, June 21.

Celebrate Father’s Day month with burgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill. Lunch includes toppings, beverages, a side and dessert. Contact the center about vegetarian options. Register with course #31288. Cost: $7 for members and $9 for nonmembers.

Annual Health Fair: 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 29.

Information for maintaining good health, a raffle, healthy snacks and health tests will be available at this free event with local vendors, prizes and more. Register with course #31207.
